Dell Computer Corporation essays The computer industry has become one of the most competitive industries in the world. With technology growing at amazing paces, many of the computer companies have fallen behind and even out of the industry since the development of the computer. Only the strongest companies have been able to be profitable and efficient. Dell Computer Corporation is one of the few corporations to be able to remain at the top of the market. Dell was founded in May of 1984 and is now the worlds number one computer systems company. Its founder, Michael Dell, has been the chief executive officer for the longest term ever in the computer industry, and is arguably the most successful of all. It is this continuous level of superior management that has helped Dell to be advantageous. Another contributor to Dells success is its simple concept to distribute computer systems directly to its customers, therefore better realizing their wants and needs. Its headquarters are located in Austin, Texas but Dell distributes products and services worldwide, mainly though the power of the Internet. Dell launched its Internet site, www.dell.com, in 1994 and began selling its products through it in 1996. In 1997, it became the first company to record $1 million in online sales. About three-quarters of the companys sales are generated from sales of desktop and notebook personal computers. It also sells workstations, network servers, and storage systems. Dells initial public offering was in 1988, when they sold 386.4 million shares at $0.09 per share(accounted for splits). In 1991, Dell sold another 364.8 million shares for $0.30 each. Today, Dells average stock price hovers around $25, after reaching a peak around $50 in 1999. Dell ranks number 48 on the Fortune 500, number seven on the Fortune Global most admired list of companies, and number 122 on the Fortune Global 500. The question that remains for Dell is can ...
